MSC Service Rationalisation in North Atlantic Trade 01/05/2003

Geneva, 1st May 2003

Due to persistent strike disruption in Spanish ports and labour shortages in the port of Le Havre which have resulted in considerable delays, MEDITERRANEAN SHIPPING COMPANY S.A has decided to split the North European and Mediterranean services covering the USA.

Effective from the middle of May 2003 there will be a separate North Atlantic service covering the major ports of the European North West Continent and the Mediterranean ports will be served by a separate dedicated service.

North Europe Ports - North Atlantic and South Atlantic Services.

In order not to create any excess capacity over existing cargo volumes, MSC will withdraw the MSC Barbara (6750 Teu) and the MSC Hudson (5500 Teu) and replace
these vessels with the MSC New York (2800 Teu) and MSC Italy (2800 Teu). In addition to the existing North European Ports served MSC will reintroduce a direct call at Bremerhaven.

Mediterranean Ports North Atlantic service

Commencing from the middle of May 2003, MSC will operate a separate service linking the Mediterranean Ports of Naples, La Spezia and Valencia with the major ports of the USA East Coast and Freeport in the Bahamas.
Five vessels rated at 1200 Teu will be deployed on the following port rotation:-

Valencia, Naples, La Spezia, Boston, New York, Baltimore, Charleston, Savannah, Freeport (Bahamas)

Excellent connections to the USA Gulf Ports, USA West Coast, South America and the Caribbean will be provided via MSC’s dedicated transhipment hub in Freeport (Bahamas).

Pasquale Formisano, Director, commenting on these service changes emphasised, “With these service changes MSC will manage to rationalise available capacity to current cargo volumes and provide considerable service enhancements for both the Northern Europe and the Mediterranean markets.”

Further information about these service changes can be obtained from your local MSC Agency Office
